Interactive neurotoxicity of environmentally relevant concentrations of polystyrene nanoplastics and butyl methoxydibenzoyl methane on early zebrafish embryos

Organic ultraviolet filters (OUVFs) and nanoplastics (NPs) are two important new pollutants that coexist widely in freshwater coastal habitats. Both OUVFs MPs can be taken up by aquatic organisms may toxic or co-toxic. In this study, the neurotoxicity interaction of typical butyl methoxydibenzoyl methane (BM-DBM) polystyrene (PS-NPs) on zebrafish at environmental concentrations were comprehensively investigated tissue molecular levels using transgenic non-transgenic zebrafish. Results showed both BM-DBM PS-NPs induced abnormal expression developmental genes neurogenin 1 , glial fibrillary acidic protein Finkel-Biskis-Jinkins osteosarcoma oncogene growth-associated 43 synapsin IIa apoptosis regulator a ( Bcl2a ), Bcl2 associated x apoptosis-related cysteine peptidase neuronal loss, motor neuron axon deletion, behavioral abnormalities larvae thus being neurotoxic. also specifically interferes with neurotransmitter systems affects signaling between neurons. addition, BM-BDM exerted synergistic antagonistic effects inducing cells neurotoxicity, respectively. Our results highlight neurotoxic risk complex interactive two. We anticipate our study lay foundation for ecological assessment exploration interactions hydrophobic organic pollutants.
